Jacques Marie Émile Lacan was a French psychoanalytical philosopher who was born in Paris in 1901. Lacan, who described himself as a “Freudian” psychoanalyst reconceptualized many of Freud’s theories, he viewed psychoanalysis as the study of how a person is created through social interaction.

Lacanian Psychoanalysis differs greatly from Freudian analysis, the French psychologist Jacques Lacan understood that individuals become fragmented when they reach a “mirror stage” in development. This stage is defined as the moment in an infant’s life when he or she looks into a mirror and recognizes the image as himself or herself. However, the image is also a separate thing, often seen as ideal in every way. This creates a schism where the subconscious tries to achieve the perfection imagined in the mirror image.

Another difference lies in the definition of the subconscious. Freud defines the subconcious as the true identity of a person that lies deep inside, below the conscious level. According to Lacanian theory, the subconscious is formed separately from the individual as a result of language and interpersonal relations. Lacan takes “self” and puts it at the center of one’s personality, but separate from the individual. This “self” is the idealized image one sees of himself or herself when considering who or what he or she wants to be in relation to the rest of the world.
